Lift Truck Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries used to run electric forklifts should be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety procedures should be followed when somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is important to check fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is important for anyone working with a forklift battery. Complete protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging place should be an emergency eyewash post. The route to the station must not be blocked and an injured worker must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited near a charging area and battery. Never permit items like for example lighters or matches to be utilized while somebody is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging place correctly ventilated. The recharging method can release fumes. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
