Lift Truck Parts in More Detail
There are many components that make up a lift truck. The lift truck's major parts consist of the truck frame, the engine parts, the tilt cylinders, the overhead guard and the wheels. In addition, a lift truck has a variety of attachments. All the components making up a forklift are all essential since they work together to make the functions of the machinery possible. The following paragraphs describe some of the forklift parts in detail.
The Overhead Guard - The overhead guard is really the forklifts metal roof, which sits atop the operator cab. It's job is to protect the operator while they are utilizing the machine. The overhead guard makes sure that nothing falling from above onto the truck would damage the controls inside the cab or harm the operator. The overhead guard is integral to the frame assembly on various models.
The Mast - Mounted either to the forklift frame or the front axle, the mast is the vertical forklift part made of interlocking rails. The mast allows the forks to move up and down while providing lateral stability. The interlocking rails may either have bushings or bushings as guides. There are two ways the mast can be operated: chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor or hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders.
Forklift Carriage - the forks and other kinds of attachments are mounted to the carriage. The carriage is attached to the mast directly to the hydraulic cylinder or it is attached by chains. In order to allow the forks to be lowered and raised, the carriage can have either rollers or bushings to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.
Load Back Rest - a back rest is a metal rack which keeps a load from falling backwards when the carriage is lifted to its full height. The back rest is either welded or bolted on to the carriage.
Forklift Attachments - a range of attachments can be fixed to the front of the lift truck. The most common attachment is forks. Moreover, there are rotators, rollers, L-shaped members, roll clamps, pole handlers and so on. These different types of attachments are useful for transporting various kinds of loads.
