Inspect a Forklift
Workplace injuries related to forklift operation in North America average approximately more than 10,000 each year, based on the statistics from OSHA and the HRSDC. Several injuries result from the lack of proper equipment inspection and maintenance of the machinery. Other injuries are because of operator error.
Injuries are not the only problem related to forklift maintenance and operation. One more serious issue is property damage. Lift truck accidents could lead to damage to sprinklers, overhead pipes, and other equipment and building walls. By completing thorough inspections on a daily basis, you can help reduce lift truck injuries.
When starting an inspection, turn off the engine. Check the levels of the fuel, engine oil, hydraulic oil, coolant and brake fluid. Visually check the tires of the machine looking for indications of wear, appropriate air pressure and general condition. Visually check the forks on the front of the machinery too. Verify the condition of the top-clip retaining pin and heel. Check that the backrest is firmly attached. Confirm that the finger guard and overhead are attached. Visually check the stops and cables, the hydraulic hoses and the mast chains too.
On liquid propane or LP forklifts, inspect the propane tank. Check for any indications of rust, corrosion or damage. Be sure that the battery has adequate levels of electrolyte and that is sufficiently charged. Visually inspect all belts. Check to verify the location of the owner's instruction manual and make sure it is situated in the designated on-board storage compartment. Verify the hood latch and confirm that it is functioning as it is supposed to. Check the seatbelt and make certain it latches securely and is working correctly.
After doing the steps above, turn the engine on. Carefully listen to the engine. Investigate any unusual sounds right away. Check that both the parking brake and the service brake are working correctly. Confirm that the accelerator and the steering controls are operating at optimum performance levels.
